It is one of the first questions people ask when they start looking into personal training: how many sessions do I actually need? The honest answer is that it depends on your goal, your schedule, and where you are starting from. Here is how our trainers at Fitness 120 think about it.
The short answer: one to three sessions a week
Most of our personal training clients meet with their trainer one to three times per week. That range covers almost everyone, from total beginners to people training for a specific result. Where you land in that range comes down to a few things.
One session a week: learn it, then own it
Once a week works well if you are already fairly active and want expert programming and accountability. Your trainer teaches you the plan, checks your form, and adjusts things as you progress. You do the rest of your workouts on your own between sessions.
- Good for people who are comfortable in a gym but stuck on a plateau
- Good for busy schedules that only have room for one guided hour
- Works best when you follow the plan on your other training days
Two sessions a week: the sweet spot for most people
Twice a week is where many clients start. It is often enough to build real momentum, learn proper technique quickly, and see steady changes in strength and energy. It also leaves room for rest and recovery, which is when your body actually adapts.
Three sessions a week: faster progress and more support
Three sessions a week makes sense if you are brand new to exercise, coming back from a long break, or working toward a specific goal on a timeline. More time with your trainer means more feedback, fewer bad habits, and a plan that changes as quickly as you do.
Coming back from an injury? Start with the right plan
If you have bad knees, a sore back, or an old injury, how often you train matters less than how you train. Our personal training is backed by clinical exercise physiology, so your trainer plans every session around your joints and your history. Bring it up at your first session and your plan will start from there.
Consistency beats intensity. A plan you can stick with for months will always beat a hard plan you quit after three weeks.
Do I need a gym membership to train?
No. At Fitness 120 you do not need a gym membership to work with a personal trainer. Personal training works on its own. If you want to add workouts between sessions, our memberships give you 24/7 access on Route 120 with no contracts.
